The National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs) program established by the Joint Commission in 2002 has announced revisions to the program that will be effective July 2019 to address the quality and safety of patient care in behavioral health environments. More specific requirements are a result of an up to date research and expert panel recommendations brought forward, and will specifically affect the way risk assessments are conducted, and the way at-risk patients are screened and subsequently monitored. The change will also address a more in-depth education of the patient and immediate stakeholders, and improving overall facility practices that relate to patient safety and wellbeing.
