Focused Factory Leader

Spec Furniture is looking for a Focused Factory Leader (FFL) who will be responsible for the operational leadership, 
implementation of strategy, and financial performance of the assigned Focused Factory (Focused Factory; specific flow of unit within Spec that is dedicated to producing a limited range of similar products or components). This position is directly responsible for leading the cross-functional (Production; Engineering, planning, Team leader and labor) customer-focused team to ensure that customer orders are accurate, complete, and delivered on time. The FFL also develops and executes operational plans to achieve business (SCOPE; Safety, Customer quality, On-time, Profitability and Engagement) objectives and align with the Company's strategic goals. Additionally, the FFL ensures that current and future manufacturing needs are met with regard to personnel, facilities, equipment, and processes. To that end, the FFL is directly accountable to the Director of Operations for the following in the assigned Focused Factory:

  • Providing consistent coaching, mentorship, and development to cell team leaders, ensuring they have the tools, skills, and authority to manage day-to-day production operations. Holding them accountable for achieving key performance metrics such as safety, productivity, quality, and on-time delivery.
  • Supporting and developing team members, ensuring alignment with performance expectations and fostering  continuous improvement.
  • Assuring that product and process quality meets Company, customer, and all other applicable standards and legislative requirements.
  • Continually improving manufacturing performance by analyzing and addressing performance gaps, identifying root causes, and implementing sustainable solutions.
  • Implementing a structured performance accountability system with regular reviews, clear performance metrics, and corrective actions for underperformance.
  • Identifying areas of risk and developing, managing, and evaluating countermeasures.
  • Developing and maintaining positive, effective relationships with customers, team members from other Focused Factories, and staff from Sales/Marketing, Customer Service, Design, Quality, and Administration.
     

    Experience and Knowledge Required:

  • Post-secondary degree or diploma, business management preferred
  • Minimum 7 years’ work experience in manufacturing or industrial engineering, contract furniture industry, preferred
  • Proven ability in making considered, decisive decisions within a collaborative environment
  • Clear communication and effective engagement with others that motivates and stretches the individual and team talents to achieve higher levels of competency
  • Strong ability in supporting and developing team members by providing hands-on leadership that demonstrates a commitment to excellence by providing consistent opportunities for effective communication; listening to concerns and resolving disruptions; and taking decisive action that drives results
  • Lean Six Sigma training or equivalent

    Specific Outcomes to be Delivered:
     

    Health and Safety

    • Demonstrate leadership in ensuring safe and healthy working conditions and compliance with safety 
      policies. Promote a health and safety culture with a goal of; 0 lost time accidents, 0 medical aid requests 
      and tracking of all first aid requests and near misses

    Leadership 

    • Lead, develop, and provide consistent coaching and mentorship to high-performing production teams 
      and cell team leaders. Empower them to manage daily operations, ensuring they are accountable for 
      key performance metrics like safety, productivity, quality, and on-time delivery.
    • Foster a culture of continuous improvement and growth, with a clear focus on personnel development. Ensure direct reports are provided with the tools, motivation, and guidance they need to succeed, including structured development and growth plans that are regularly reviewed and acted upon.
    • Ensure performance reviews are thorough, accurate, and completed on time, with measurable accountability and continuous feedback loops for improvement.
       

    Collaboration

    • Build and sustain a collaborative and trusting partnership with Sauder Manufacturing Co. (SMC), suppliers, sales representatives, and dealers. Actively contribute to Spec’s Operations Team. 

    Planning 

    • In conjunction with the operations Team, participate in the ongoing review and development of the strategic and business plans, operations strategy, and action plans to support Company goals and objectives (ROMs). 
       

    Day-to-day Operations

    • Ensure that the Daily Production Plan and customer needs are met by identifying, addressing, and eliminating disruptions (materials, quality, personnel, facilities and equipment, and processes) and coordinating efforts with other FFL’s and other staff members. Work to achieve 90% defect-free sales orders long with 90% factory on-time. Work to achieve defect-free sales orders along with factory on time.

    Strategic Initiatives

    • Lead strategic initiatives that improve safety, delivery, agility, scalability, productivity, and efficiency to 
      ensure that consistent and efficient workflows are in place, yielding optimal performance

    Financial

    • In collaboration, develop sound financial and budgetary plans; monitor gross margin results, and take remedial action if required in order to meet financial targets

    Relationship Building

    • Build and maintain customer-focused relationships with both internal and external stakeholders to make informed decisions regarding strategic priorities

    Quality 

    • Act as a quality champion. Work with suppliers and internal customers to resolve quality or delivery issues. Ensure that activities conform to Company-established quality standards and that non conforming items are appropriately handled

    Continuous Improvement

    • Leverage LEAN principles in implementing and enhancing continuous improvement initiatives to improve value stream performance in terms of safety, quality, on time delivery, profitability, and customer satisfaction

Seating Assembly Worker (Day Shift and 2nd Shift)
  • Follow work orders to assemble Spec products to required quality standard; complete required paperwork; perform needed tests/inspections 
  • Follow daily operating checklist; perform routine maintenance to ensure equipment is running safely; Notify team leader of issues 
  • Maintain clean and safe work area; Use hand tools safely and properly 
  • Ensure suppliers’ products (hardware, fabric, etc.) meet work order requirements and company standards 
  • Ensure that packaging of outgoing products is adequate to prevent damage to products or personnel
