Spec™ is continuously looking to improve and innovate our manufacturing processes, even within our existing product lines. Our lounge seating team raised a concern that we were creating unnecessary waste during the manufacturing of our Tailor seating line. 

Originally built from plywood, the seat box needed to be assembled, and then routered in several locations to create access or accommodate connection points for the rest of the build. As the popularity of the line grew, so did our waste, and the team took it upon themselves to find a solution to reduce it. 

As such, alternative plywood vendors were explored, and different manufacturing processes evaluated, but the solution lay with a material known to Spec – 100% recycled plastic molds. Recycled Plastic molds have been used in Snowball and Urban seats for over a decade. The material is extremely durable and is a preferred solution for infection control. Substituting new plywood with entirely recycled plastic was a win-win for everyone. Most importantly, our waste to landfill on this product was essentially eliminated.
